Shocked and disbelieving probably describes how I felt on Friday afternoon when I received an email saying I had been shortlisted for Best Director at the Brand Film Festival, but apparently no mistake had been made! I am a big believer in the team efforts of filmmaking, so it feels strange to be recognised for my part in what was a huge undertaking by not just myself, but Harrison Bates as the talented under-water camera op he is, those who have trained me over the years, Riyadh Hague/Mike Lavis/Eleanor Driscoll, as well as all the lifeguards and RNLI staff who made Become a Lifeguard happen.
There’s many times (as any filmmaker will know) when you want to give up and doubt your ability, but it’s down to the friends, family and industry colleagues who keep you going, people who believe in you whether you’ve been shortlisted or not. But I am incredibly excited at having being shortlisted and look forward to meeting some talented filmmakers at the awards ceremony!
